Transport & safety well protected on the road

How to transport your e-bike in the car, on a rear carrier, or by train, and how to protect it against theft. Plus: battery handling, child/passenger transport, and an emergency check.
Key Basics
Transport by Car (Rear or Towbar Carrier)
  • Carrier Approval: Use only e-bike-approved carriers with sufficient load capacity.
  • Reduce Weight: Remove battery, displays, baskets; cover all contacts.
  • Attachment: Use frame pads; secure wheels/rails; check clamping force on the support arm.
  • Clearance/Protection: Separate contact points with foam/protective film; keep number plate/lights visible.
  • Weather: For heavy rain or long trips, optionally use a cover (avoid flapping tarpaulins).
Tip: Check the torque of components (e.g. seatpost, stem) before going on the motorway.
Inside the Vehicle
  • Secure the bike against tipping (using lashing eyes); keep chain/belt facing downwards.
  • Remove battery/displays, cover contacts; use a blanket or mat underneath.
  • Remove or turn pedals/handlebar if needed.
Train / Public Transport
  • Check the provider’s tariffs, reservations, and carriage conditions.
  • Switch off the e-bike; lock or remove the battery securely (follow regulations).
  • Protect vulnerable components (display, sensors, derailleur).
Battery & Safety
  • Remove & Protect: For car transport, remove the battery and store it dry and cushioned (10–25 °C).
  • Contacts: Cover against moisture/dirt; avoid high-pressure cleaning.
  • Fire Safety: No damage or deformation; contact your dealer if you notice anything unusual.
Quick Guide: I want to … ⇒ Here’s how
Goal
Steps
Note
Secure e-bike on rear carrier
Check carrier load capacity → Remove battery/display → Fix frame with protective pad → Strap wheels/rail → Retighten after 10 km.
Carrier approved for e-bikes
Transport inside the car
Remove battery → Secure bike with straps → Cushion sensitive parts → Adjust pedals/handlebar.
Cover contacts
Travel by train/public transport
Check carriage rules → Switch off bike → Reserve if needed → Add impact protection.
Provider guidelines
Improve theft protection
Use a D-lock/ABUS class lock or similar → Secure frame + solid object → 2nd lock for wheel → Consider GPS/tracker.
Record frame number
Transport child & load safely
Check seat/trailer approval → Installation by dealer → Test ride → Allow for braking distance.
Observe max load
Note: Maximum loads (bike + luggage + child) and road regulations may vary – check locally.
Safe on the Road – Short Checklist
  • Lights & Brakes: Function check before every ride.
  • Tyre Pressure: As indicated on sidewall; too soft = less control.
  • Helmet & Visibility: Wear bright clothing/reflectors; adjust helmet correctly.
  • Load: Distribute weight evenly, keep centre of gravity low; consider braking distance.
  • Lock & Documents: Note down frame number; keep spare key separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the battery stay on the bike during car transport?
We recommend removing the battery and storing it separately, cushioned and dry. Cover the bike’s contacts.
Which lock is suitable?
A high-quality D-lock or folding lock, with at least medium security level from the manufacturer. Secure frame + solid object; add a second lock for the wheel.
Children / trailer – what should I watch out for?
Use only approved seats/trailers, ensure proper installation/adapters, take a test ride. Observe the bike’s maximum load.
