Trailers & child seats – safe travel with family and luggage

Here’s how to check your bike’s suitability, choose the right coupling/seat solution and make sure everything is safely adjusted.
Key Basics
Does a trailer / child seat fit my bike?
  • Frame & load capacity: Observe your bike’s maximum system weight (bike + rider + child/trailer + luggage).
  • Brakes: Hydraulic disc brakes are ideal for everyday use with additional loads.
  • Axle/compatibility: Choose the rear axle (quick release/thru axle) that matches the coupling; an adapter may be required.
  • Stand & stability: A sturdy double stand makes coupling and uncoupling easier.
  • Luggage rack: For rear seats, ensure load capacity and approval (e.g. ISO 11243).
Tip: Tell your dealer your bike model, axle type and the trailer/seat you want – they’ll check adapters and approvals.
Trailers
  • Child: 1–2 children, weather-protected, plenty of storage space.
  • Cargo: Loads/luggage, low loading bed, very stable.
  • Couplings: Mount on rear axle (most common) or frame mount; depends on manufacturer.
Child Seats
  • Rear rack seat: Very common; check rack approval/load rating.
  • Front/frame-mounted seat: Only for suitable tube shapes/approved frames; ensure steering clearance.
  • Weight limits: Depend on manufacturer (typically up to around 22 kg for rear seats).
Safety & Handling
  • Centre of gravity & braking distance: Brake early when loaded; take corners more gently.
  • Tyre pressure: Keep near the upper end of the recommended range.
  • Lights/reflectors: Fit to trailer/seat according to manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Helmet & seat belts: Always secure children correctly; ensure helmets fit properly.
Quick Selection: I want to … → Here’s how
Goal
Steps
Note
Select trailer coupling
Check axle type (QR/thru axle) → choose matching coupling/adapter → fit as per manufacturer.
Dealer checks approval
Safely attach trailer
Lock coupling → set safety strap/pin → check lights/reflectors → test ride & re-tighten.
Re-tighten after 10 km
Fit rear child seat
Check rack approval/load → mount bracket → lock seat → adjust harness/foot straps.
Check steering/pedalling clearance
Inspect front/frame seat
Check tube diameter/steering range → fit manufacturer’s mount → test ride without child → fine-tune afterwards.
Use only if approved
Ready to ride with child/load
Increase tyre pressure → check lights → test brakes firmly but under control → plan a defensive route.
Wear helmet & secure belts correctly
Note: Follow manufacturer information on maximum towing weight, speed and child size/weight.
Pre-ride Check (2–3 minutes)
  • Coupling/seat locked, safety set, all bolts tight.
  • Tyre pressure sufficient, lights/reflectors OK.
  • Belts/foot straps adjusted, helmet fitted correctly.
  • Short brake and slalom test at walking pace.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every trailer fit every e-bike?
No. Axle type/coupling and approvals must match. Thru-axles often require a special adapter.
From what age/weight is a child seat suitable?
Follow the seat manufacturer’s specifications and always use helmet and straps.
What should I consider when braking?
Braking distance increases with load. Ride proactively, brake early and take wider, slower turns.
Next Steps
Choose a trailer/seat with approval, check the adapter, and have installation checked by your dealer – then take a test ride and fine-tune.
